Benefits of Coconut Oil for Your Beauty
When we were kids, we read a story about the “giving tree,” the coconut tree. It was called such because all parts of it are useful. We know that coconut is food, but did you know it also offers a lot of beauty benefits?
We know someone who thanks coconut oil (and her mom, for forcing the routine on her for years when she was a kid) for her thick, shiny, jet black hair. But we did not know coconut had these other benefits as well.
For Your Hair
Your hair and scalp need plenty of fatty acids for moisture and nourishment. Luckily, coconut oil is rich in fatty acids. In fact, this is the main reason coconut oil has been used by some cultures for generations for cosmetic purposes.
To be specific, coconut oil is believed to significantly reduce hair breakage, increase luster and shine, fight frizz, get rid of dandruff and lice, and promote growth.
Take note, though, that although coconut oil encourages hair growth, it does not reverse any underlying condition that may be causing hair loss.
Also, remember that at the end of the day, it still depends on what your scalp is comfortable with. Although a lot of people have benefited (and continue to do so!) from coconut oil, it does not always mean you will get the same results. (Source)
For Your Skin
There is a reason why millions of women entrust their skin to coconut oil. But the best way to understand what it does is to know what is in it exactly. First, it contains a lot of saturated fats, which are great at keeping the skin smooth and locking in moisture.
Coconut oil also has a lot of capric, caprylic, and lauric acid, which possess antimicrobial and disinfectant properties. This wonder oil also has vitamin E, and we don’t think we have to tell you what that does!
Finally, coconut oil is rich in proteins, which keep the skin healthy, radiant, and rejuvenated inside and out. (Source)
For Your Breath
You may have heard about something called “oil pulling,” which is gargling with oil as mouthwash. Right now, there isn’t a lot of official studies that confirm this, and nearly all the available information online come from people who have done it and saw good results.
So how is it done and how does it work? It’s very simple. You put a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth and gargle it for 10 to 15 minutes, then spit it out.
Apparently, the bacteria in your mouth get “pulled” into the oil (hence the term oil pulling).
In summary, you can call coconut an all-around beauty secret in addition to its already long list of benefits. It’s got your hair, skin, and breath all covered!
The routines take time and effort, but it is way more fulfilling (and financially practical!) to get the results you’ve always wanted the natural way instead of splurging on pills, creams, and cosmetic procedures!
