How to Maximize Results from Anti-Aging Skin Care Products
Reality dictates that the way you use your anti-aging skin care products highly affects their results on your skin. It’s not just an ‘apply them all’ thing. In fact, there are so-called unwritten rules that you can apply so that you can get the most out of your skin care products. After all, you would only want what’s best for your skin, right? This guide will help you learn how to maximize results from anti-aging skin care products, and enjoy their benefits on your skin.
- Gentle Exfoliants (brand may vary depending on your choice)
- Lukewarm Water
- Thick ointments or creams
Step 1: Exfoliate Skin First
The surface of our skin’s epidermis is filled with dead skin cells. They serve as barriers which may prevent the absorption of whatever skin care product you are applying now. Therefore, if you want complete absorption of your favorite product, make sure to remove those dead skin cells first. This can be done by exfoliating.
You can use some cleansers, but they only free up the mores by removing oil and dirt. However, in order to really improve absorption, you will need an enzyme that will exfoliate your skin. It is advisable to use gentle exfoliants so that you will also not end up harming your skin.
Step 2: Apply in Order
Little as we know it, our anti-aging skin care products also come with a first-come-first-serve basis. This means that whatever you apply on your skin first is absorbed first. Therefore, whether you are trying to fight zits, wrinkles or sun spots, make sure that you apply the most active ingredients first.
If you are using two different kinds of products to address two different skin issues, apply one first to your bare skin in the morning, and use the other one on your bare skin at night. This will ensure 100% efficiency from both of the results.
After applying the treatments, make sure that you smooth other items according to the order of density, starting from the thinnest to the thickest. This means that you can apply your antioxidant serum first, and finishing with your night cream or sunscreen. There is an exception to this rule, however. It is not safe to apply retinoids first because it can irritate sensitive skin.
Step 3: Apply on Damp Skin
When it comes to applying anti-aging skin care products, damp skin serves like a sponge. Therefore, you can expect that it can quickly absorb everything that you apply on it. Keep in mind, though, that your skin should just be damp, but not wet. This rule also applies to almost all types of products, retinoids included.
However, if you are applying a mineral-based sunscreen, it is not absorbed by your skin. In fact, it has been designed to just stay on top of the skin surface, because it works by reflecting the rays of the sun. If you apply it on damp skin, mineral has the tendency to run and result to uneven coverage, thus looking chalky in the end.
Step 4: Use Lukewarm Water
As you wash your face, it is also advisable to use lukewarm water rather than cold. By doing so, you are slightly raising the temperature of your skin, thus causing your pores and blood vessels to dilate as an effort to cool the skin down.
The presence of space located in between cells only means that there is a wider area for product absorption, thus helping the product to get in. At the same time, ingredients freely move through your skin, interacting with more cells when your skin is warm. As a bonus, washing your face with lukewarm water is also more comfortable than washing it off with cold water.
Step 5: Top Off with Select Ointments
If you want to increase the absorption of any anti-aging skin care product on your skin, one of the best ways is to top your skin with ingredients that contain occlusive, heavy ointments. These thick creams and ointments contain huge amounts of natural butters, petrolatum, waxes, and oils, making the best agents for occlusion.
However, avoid doing so on top of acids, retinoids, hydroquinone or Vitamin C. The addition of ointment over these products will only double their strength, thus resulting to a lot of irritation. This should also be avoided if you are quite prone to acne, as it may only result to further irritation.
Step 6: Apply Retinoids at Nighttime
Retinoids work wonders on our skin. They fight the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. They perform their best in the darkness, because both the over-the-counter and prescription products weaken and degrade under the sun.
Another unique benefit that is offered by applying retinoids at nighttime is that the temperature of our skin tends to rise by around half a degree as we sleep. This is because more blood is concentrated on the skin, and away from other internal organs.
With better dilation of the blood vessels, and greater warmth at the same time, better penetration can be expected. Even though the difference may not be enormous, the skin has the natural tendency to absorb more at nighttime. This also goes with all other ingredients, aside from retinoids.
Step 7: Use Serum
Serums are a concentrated form of active ingredients. As such, they have the tendency to penetrate really fast and completely. This is also unhindered by emollients that come in lotion-type form, making it quite difficult for active ingredients to get absorbed.
The idea behind this is similar to that of choosing parfum over cologne in fragrances. Parfum contains the strongest dosage of active ingredients, making them last longer compared to cologne. By using serum in your skin-care routine, you are also increasing hydration and penetration accordingly, thus making sure that your skin is at its best condition. It is also known to provide intense moisture to your skin, which is very important in preventing the signs of early skin aging.
No doubt, aging is an inevitable scenario. However, by using anti-aging skin care products, we are slowing the process down, allowing us to enjoy our years better. By applying the steps above, we are also maximizing the results of these products, thus expecting the best out of them.
